Canon - Nikkor -  Helios.

At the beginning of January 2015 we - myself with family - had a short walk trip nearby river Danube just around Bratislava. Those

of you who dedicates to photography can notice some differences in following photos. Others may just have a look on this small

documentary. I shot all digitally on

Canon 5D Mark2

using three lenses: Canon 35mm f1.4L, Nikkor 55mm Auto f1.2 and Helios

58mm f2.0. I do not use any Canon 50mm what would better suit this trinity, but 35 served my well this time. It is clear it is not

fair match, expensive autofocus lens vs. 40 years old glasses. Therefore I am not going to compare them head to head to pixel

sharpness. I just want to share my feelings and the feel of results. I used to shot all on open iris. I like shallow DoF and nice

bokeh. Canon lens if far best from the other two, but Helios offer unique feeling, very smooth manual focusing and nice bokeh.

Natural vignetting and contract makes this lens quite attractive. Nikkor on the other hand has less contrast, too creamy bokeh

and a little milky softness typical for old f1.2 lens. The build quality of Nikkor does not reach Helios quality. Sound strange but it

is so.

All pictures are digitally manipulated and on these web resolutions you cannot see all differences. For

real documentary

where I

have one chance to take the photo I would recommend to use Canon lens. For more experimental and artistic work you can try

old lenses. They feel differently you can reach vintage look but modern lens gives you more flexibility and less effort. I use Nikkor

lens for what I call Vintage video. Digital Full HD video is less demanding for sharpness then digital photo. I use bunch of other

lenses for cinema, but old lenses give a natural vintage look. It is what I like in poetical films.
